hey all! i just put sand into my 30 gal for my cichlids and put in some lava too. its gotten the water pretty cloudy though. (the sand and lava were washed thuroly) how long until the sand settles or until the clouds go away?
You Will get cloudy water every time you do a >50% WC in a tank with sand, the simplest soultion is to buy a sponge internal filter rated at 3-4 times your tank's volume which will clear the tank in about 2 hours. I have two tanks both with sand (150 gallon and 30 gallon) i use a sponge filter to clear cloudiness in them.
I haven't had any problems with cloudiness in my tanks, using pool filter sand. If it's still cloudy this morning I'd be surprised. Water changes will take care of it, I did 4 75% changes after changing substrate and have had no problems since. How did you make the switch? Are the fish still in the tank? If so, I guess you'll just have to be patient.
same thing here, pool filter sand settled very quickly and didnt have any issues with cloudiness, but then again I started the tank from scratch, not replacing the gravel.
as far as cloudy water with every PWC I beg to differ. I do 50%pwc weekly and never have any issues. just make sure that you dont dump the water right on the sand and you will be OK.
well the tank is not clear today. i can't really do a lot of water changes because the fish are in the tank, and i'm treating for ich and other parasites right now. i also replaced my decor with lava which i'm told collects lots of beneficial bacteria. so i'll just have to be patient. i don't have a sponge filter. i have a penguin 200 i think? its the penguin for 50 gal tanks.
