I have a chance to get a tank my Brother in law has had sitting in his spare bedroom empty for the last year and a half. It’s a nice tank All Glass I think maybe Oceanic, and now my sister is telling him he needs to get it out of the house (baby on the way), my question is since its be sitting empty for that long should I worry about the seal being bad. Dose the silicon dry rot if its hasn’t been wet for over a year, I’ve never let a tank sit empty so I would like to know if I would be okay taking the tank and cleaning it and get it up and cycling. This is the saltwater tank I asked about before changing it to freshwater.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and any help would be greatly appreciated.

It should be fine... If in doubt just fill it up outside first and see if it leaks

I think it will be okay.

I constantly have tanks in some form of done, or undone, I have tanks that have sat empty for years! What you hear about, when people say the tank has sat out, and wondering with concerns about leaking, is generally, when someone has left the tank sit outside. If the tank was in direct sunlight, It will dry out the silicone from weather, and sun, otherwise, since it has sat inside, in a climate controlled environment, I see no issue with the silicone. Like the others have said, fill, and test! its the best way to be sure!
Does it have everything you need for a SW set up?..why not join the dark side ;)

I have a 29 gal that I have had for 20 years. It has sat empty for the past 10-15. I just set it up a couple months ago and no problems. I did fill it up in the garage first and let it set a few days before filling it in the house.

i just gave my lil brother my spare tank that has been in my loft for 6 maybe more years, all good no leaks.

I say go for it. If it aint broke.....just do what the others have said, you not gonna lose anything. You are gaining a free tank i take it? It is free?
