Can someone tell me how long new fish should be quarentined before moving into the main tank?

I normally qt for about 2 weeks. I like to do this for 2 reasons. 1 is to eyeball those fish daily and look for problems. The second is to beef them up and be ready to survive in the main tank. I generally have schooling fish adn they can be pretty rough on each other when making the pecking order. This gives new fish a chance to get lots to eat early on and build up their strength.

I would say a min of a week is in order. That will at least be long enough to look for something like ich to appear, and a min of 1 week after the last signs of any diseases.

To expand on qt time a little. Qt should continue for 2 weeks after fish health has been achieved! If you're doing say, clown loaches... Always get ich. It seems to be a universal for them. You need to keep them in the QT tank for two weeks AFTER the last signs of disease have passed to make sure you're not going to have a resurgence.

4 weeks is necessary to see the development of most parasitic worms that may be present within an aquatic animal (4-6 is ideal).

2 weeks will verify ~90% of diseases/ailments, 4 weeks nearing a 100

Plants 1-2 weeks (2 is ideal).

The normal quarantining time is usually around 4 weeks after there are no signs of illness or if there is illness after the treatment and the fish appear to be healthy. Remember to reset the clock once they are healthy so say if they are sick and treated for two weeks you should quarantine for an additional four weeks after the sick fish are fine.

I know some folks leave a tank up and running as QT. I might ad that I dont recommend snails or invertibrates of any kind, nor live plants. Keep a different fish, like 2 male guppie(one light, one dark)or something, if you must. This is the tank that is MOST LIKELY to get treated. And many treatments specifically will kill plants and/or inverts.

I just had another incident that happened outside a qt. A dark bodied fish made it past QT time. Weeks later, I am now dealing with a parasite that manifests itself as dark dots. So that is why I will put the dark and light fish in the QT tank now.
