how long do i need to leave media from another filter in my canister? i just need to remove the media from one of my aquatechs. ill still have the media from my aquaclear 70 and my other aquatech.

Hmm. I'd say 3 weeks to be safe and a week and a half of you need the media back for something but others may know better than I. When I had to seed a canister I just hooked up to my tank and didn't add any established media to it (basically using the entire tank and other canister as established media) and people told me to leave it for at least a month but I left it on there for around 10 days and when I put it on a new tank there was hardly a spike.

I have always done at least 2 weeks. Longer if I had a big bioload going in. Never had an issue.

when i get new tanks, i take some sand ( as i dont like gravel, i use sand ) and one filter media from a running filter that has been in a colonized tank for more then a month.. then wait a few days, then call the new tank cycled..

it really doesn't take much time for a filter to house bacteria..usualy afew days.. but most will err on the side of caution and let a filter seed for 2 weeks or more.

remember bacteria will multiply exponentially until it reaches the level of the food.. so it won't take much time to catch up...usually hours.

I rarely seed filters these days and prefer to rinse media(sponges) from established tanks to 'seed ' a new tank.

I've teted this method many times and have seen tanks stablize in as little as 2 days

I agree completely. I rarely actually move media...squeezing the filter into the tank will sufficiently establish a tank IME as long as you stock reasonably slowly. Not only that, but this way also helps to get extra debris and dirt out of the old filter media.
