Just being curious: my tap water has a ph of 7, and is tastes like.. let's say... water :)

A tomato has a Ph level of 4 8according to a frind of mine who is a agricultural engineer), and it tastes a little acid. Lemon juice might be as low as 1.

But, how low should the ph water go until it tastes funny. I tasted a ph 5 water from an aquarium and it tasted like fish poo, but not acid. YUCK!

I wonder if water could reach a ph of 3, or even lower. Or would then water become an acid, or an acidic solution. What's the lowest ph water can reach?

a pure acid would be made up of H+ cations... water is H2O while a pure base are OH- anions... although if you mix an acid and a base together (if they are really strong) they will also produce a salt as well as water, although this is from other stuff that is usually in the acid/base...

call it what you want, its usually semantics, although acidic water is that way usualy from sulpheric or nitric acids (acid rain) that is dissolved in the water, not from pure ions that are dissolved in the water...
if the water itself were an acid maybe it would be called oxic acid? :huh:

I remeber from high school that all acids have Hidrogen in their composition, just like sulfuric acid H2SO4.

And also remeber this equation:

HCl + NaOH = H2O + NaCl
Clorhidric acid + Sodium Hidroxide = Water + Sudium Cloride.

Not very useful for the thread, but had to say it.

Umm … putting fish poo into your digestive system is probably not something a physician would advise.

Well, think of it this way.

Acid = H+
Base = OH-

Water = H2O... or... HOH

Water is essentially the perfect balance of acid and base. As previously mentioned, "acidic" water simply has acids dissolved in it. "Alkaline" water has bases dissolved in it.

Oh, and patoloco... HCl = "Clorhidric acid"? I think you were looking for Hydrochloric. ;)

I'm sorry. I know I'm not contributing to the question but MAN!! LOL...you made me spit coffee on my monitor with that. You are too much pato!

Do you mean it tasted like what you imagine fish poo would taste like or have you actually tasted that as well?

this would be true, except what makes water acidic or basic usually isn't pure acid/base ions
usually stuff like sulfuric or nitric acid is dissolved in the water to make it acidic... although i'm not sure what is dissolved in it to make it basic, but i would guess either small amounts of ammonium or something like that...

if you did come across water with pure H+ dissolved in it, then it would be hydroxic acid... or something like that

:rolleyes: When I saw this thread I really hoped it didn't involve tasting tank water, EEEEWWWW!!!!
Get a pH meter. A lot safer. Then you can test whatever and whenever you want.
