Right now in my 55 are 25 lemon tetras i plan on also adding 15 corys, not sure on species yet. So the question is how many angels? Will more then one possibly form a pair and kill off the rest of the tank? as for filtration i have a magnum 350 with 2 large biowheels and the canister is full of bioballs and then a penguin 330 biowheel

cool that sounds great so i would say about 5 to 6 juvie angels to start with and sort them out as they grow and you will be able to form a pair or a couple pairs in a 55gal everything else sounds sweet just keep up on water changes..

I wouldn't say 'kill', but most breeding pairs do harass other angels to death although they will leave dithers alone as long as they don't venture near the pair's territory. Avoid the black strains as they are more challenging to keep than most other strains. Gold, zebra, marble and koi will provide a good start for you.

They should be able to pair off at 8 months of age and you can separate them until they start spawning but it depends on most strains as some take a little longer to mature and eventually pair off.

I wouldn't do more than three for the long run.

yeap, I agree with rb. I wouldn't do more than three and when the 2 form a bond from that, be prepared to move the odd man out of the tank. I did 3 in a 55 galon and was forced myself.... the harassment can lead up to the death of the left out fish.

Sorry first post was a little short on info was late and wanted to post before i went to sleep. Basically this is my first display tank after getting back into the hobby. I am not really looking to breed anything at this time. If i go with 1 will he not be happy alone? If i go with 2 and they are male male or female female will they be ok? as i go up i know i am more and more likely to form a breeding pair which would be nice but is not my goal and don't want to have to move the odd man out.

I just went through this, I originally bought 5 small angels, 2 died from parasite infections, 3 survived, 2 paired up and spawned on Friday, they have been attacking anything (3rd angel, tetras, cory cats) that came anywhere close to their end of the tank, and were literally tearing the 3rd angel (who was giving as good as he got) to shreds.

I had to go out and buy a 29G to move the pair into, I am not trying to breed angels, but did not want to watch them kill each other.

If you have no plans to breed, or for more than 1 tank then just get a single angel. I have a single in my 55G now and he looks quite happy swimming around in all the space he now has.
