How many angles to get?

I would go with 2..the footprint is relatively small but, the height looks good for a pair.
what othertank mates were you planning?

I'd pay the extra & get a "proven pair" via club sale or private party as I agree that with a corner tank, there isn't enough room for both pairs to go into nesting mode w/o trouble. If it were a regular 55g w/ plants throughout, I'd say go for a 4 pack and let them sort themselves out (as long as you have at least 2 females, all should be well w/ 4).

Also - sexing angels is tough unless you see 'em spawning.

I guess I am the only dissenter. Go with 4. If they pair off and you have trouble pull the ones that haven't paired off. At least this way you have some to choose from rather than buying 2 and find out later on the color or finnage is bad. Heck, go with 6. And then scale down later. Trading back into the LFS full size angels will pay for the extra one you buy if you buy small ones.

Who knows. It may work out just fine with 4 in there. In the tank in my avatar I have one gigantic angel and two smaller ones that have paired off and have since added a nice black one. The Gold Capped Marbles lay eggs all the time. They never bicker with the big dog. They pair off on the left. I feed them on the right. He stays near where I feed. Once I pull some of the plants out of there I may just add another angel....

No your not, I also agree with you go with the 4 as far as pairing off that would be 6 months to a year down the road. if you are lucky. when I generate a pair for breading I place 6 young ones about the size of a quarter in a tank and grow them out and usually get 1 pair sometimes but rarely 2 pairs will form angels need a group to pair off.

Don't be put off getting more the aggressiveness is just about bread out of these fish they are not the same as they were in the 70 and earlier which is when they were really aggressive and got their reputation. not that you cant get one now but in my experience its very rare. The exception is when they spawn they will chase all tank mates to the other side of the tank.

I had 3 in a 42 hex which has a much small ft print but is about as high as your corner tank they grew to be as big as you hand in body sizes and are very healthy never been sick.(knocking on wood)

There are ways to tell males from females but it's by no means fool proof those of us who breed them, we can usually tell. That takes time to learn by experience.

Well, I got 2 today. I'm glad I got 2 because now that they are in the tank, I can see that even though 4 would be doable, 2 is a good size for the tank. They are both from the same tank, both about a half dollar size. They are still getting used to the tank of course, exploring the caves and corners and all that.

The first thing one did was start nipping at my 9 inch pleco who was eating some zucchini. The pleco stopped eating, put up with the nipping for about 10 seconds, and chased the nipper away. I haven't seen either angle bother him since, though they look at him. Other then trying to eat my ghost shrimp, they've been fine with the guppies and platys.

However... one angle chases the other away from one part of the tank. I wish I could find a good website on their behavior so I would know why they do what they do. Are they establishing a pecking order, or territory, or is one just not very nice? Or are 2 a bad Idea and I need to get more? Or should I stop worrying and let them get used to their new home? :)

Here are the pic's of the new guys(or girls). They get along peacefully with the guppies and platys, though I think the guppies will be their snack eventually. One has claimed one side of the tank and chases the other away. The other is peaceful. The one that is territorial has a larger hump on his head then the other. Does that mean anything? They are both beautiful, though, and I'm looking forward to them growing up. They make great fry eaters, too. One of the guppies gave birth and the angles gobbled them up immediately.

I noticed most male angelfish do have the humps but to be positive with the guess, always wait until they spawn.

Those are lovely angels.:)

Or should I stop worrying and let them get used to their new home? :)

That's my recommendation. :)

You've put them in a new world, so they're probably reestablishing the pecking order. :argue:

nice angels.
let them work out territorial issues.

while a hump on the head may indicate male it is no where near 100% as a way to sex angels. if they spawn you 'll be able to tell.(ovipositors are different..males longer and thin females short and blunt)
