How many Assorted Apistogramma in a 30gallon species tank?

what if I went all males? Or is it much better to keep them in pairs?

all male tank really works with africans hap/peacock tank. i would do all female ( then 6 ) or 2 males 2 female.

I wouldn't recommend mixing apistogrammas though, but the 2:2 ration sound pretty good.

id only do a pair. i had a pair in a 29 and they took up the whole tank as there territory. a 30 is only like 6 inches longer.

I would be careful, dont get Apistos from the same complex (there are 6 of them) eg Macmasteri and Viejita are the same complex and can hybridise if they breed. I would stick to the ABC (Agassizzi, Borelli and Cacatouides) of Apistos if you want a few different ones in the same tank. But with a 30G (approx 120L) tank I would only keep 4.

<rant>I hate measuring tanks in gallons as there it varies between US and UK measurements...litres are universal, 10x10x10cm of water is a litre. No wonder so many NASA things have gone splat due to incorrect conversions!</rant>

False choice. A "species tank" by definition contains a single species.
