How many cories???

i understand the more the merrier but they dont NEED schools, some fish need to be in schools or risk dying, cories just like being in schools for protection and stuff. Ive seen people have cories in pairs for years without problems

It is not a question of what they need...it is what causes them to display natural behavior.

I disagree. I have 12 Cories and four species and they are all very happy together.

FWIW, I have three in one tank. I thought they were all c. trilineatus; that's what the LFS tag said. Over time, two of them hung out together more and more, with the other becoming more of a "loner". Upon close examination, I realized the "loner" was actually a c. julii. So I do tend to think they actually prefer their own kind.

They do need schools. If they are not kept in groups, yes they will live, but they will not be happpy. If you keep them in pairs, they wont display their natural behavior and will not be as happy as they would be if they were kept in groups. So that means they do need to be in shoals.

PDX-PLT, what does FWIW mean?

I agree, they certainly don't "need" a school in order to survive, but they certainly are more happier with one. I have had both a school and a pair at a time and the difference of the 2 groups are amazing. The school of cories seem to be way more happy, healthy and active. I suggest nothing less than 3-6.

Exactly Dangerdoll...

IMO keeping pets is about providing them with the best conditions you can, with the information you receive, that is most like their natural habitat, as they have evolved to live with certain needs. If you have $ to throw into fish, and you have the resources here and on the internet, all of which advise pretty much the same, I think you should follow the advice to the best of your ability. Experiencing or living through someone else's experience is valuable. I had 4 cories down to three now, they swim and eat and try to school, but they were calmer with 4 and I can tell you soon how they'll be with over six, as I am getting more. I think species may make the least difference, but I told what I thought was the perfect scenario. I would not buy fish that I was told to put into a school if I didn't have the intension of getting the appropriate #.

So that is where my answer is coming from. I stress over the mistakes I have made. I figure I should pass on what I have learned.

I currently have 3 swords, 2 neons (I can't keep them alive so I am not going to buy more), and 3 white skirt tetras. I will buy another bronze cory and 2 more peppered cories (then there will be 3 of each). Then I will buy 4 pandas as they are small. I do water changes every week, and have 2 filters on the tank. I don't think that I should have a problem with over crowding. Thanks for your advice everyone!!!!!
