Just a quick question. i am planning between a 150 and 200 gallon heavily planted tank, I would like to keep a bunch of discus and then some small schooling fish (tetras and such). This should all be setup within the next 3 to 5 months (expecting delays).

Ok anyway for the question, how many discus could i keep in my 55 gallon tank if i get them at 2-3 inches and will be moving them to the above mentioned tank in the stated time (there are currently no inhabitants, just finished cycling, and running 2 whisper 60s with a fluval 404 on its way. (should be penty of overkill on filtration).

After the fish are moved to the larger tank, i will probably use the 55 to attempt raising a couple batches of discus fry when (and if) they breed

i gotta say. . . if your signature is correct you should look into upgrading some of your current stock before getting any more fish. the silver dollars (4-6" adult size), clown loaches (10+"), oscar (14+"), ghost knife (12+") and maybe the blood parrots and pleco (depending on what species it is) could ALL use larger homes very soon.

a 200g could be used for all the fish mentioned above that need a larger home, plus everything in the 55 and 33. then you could consolidate the 20 long and 10g together, put the cray into the 10g to avoid him attacking other fish, and the rosy barbs could go in the 20g too. then you would have 2 55g's available for discus.

current stock issues notwithstanding, i would say you could grow out maybe 8-12 discus in the 55, but you would have to deal with the daily large WC's, and you should keep it bare bottom for now so it's easier to keep clean every day.

Ditto the above...you need to re-adjust most of what you have before tackling anything new...

You could do like 20 2-3 inch Discus in a 55 bare bottom with alot of W/C. You can keep that many adults in a 150 - 200 gallon with good maintenence.

Definately get your other fish into the 200 gallon and you may be able to raise 4-5 discus in a 55 gallon as their permanant home, since you will not be able to move them to the 200 gallon (that will be the home of the aforementioned fish).

k well thank you redscare for the answer apperantly everyone else didn't read the part that the 55 i have right now for the discus is empty.

Also my sig is so old i have changed things around alot and gotten rid of some fish just haven't had time to update. And as mentioned before the discus will be gorwing out in a newly cycled 55 with nothing in it, jeez you guys are so quick to judge (allthough partly my fault for not updating my sig but still) Should be updated now.

Please remember that 20 3 inch Discus in a 55 would require daily water changes for good size and development. I know a guy that keeps like 15 - 20 7-10 inch Discus in 75 gallon tanks. They look great!!!

i would probably only put 10-12 at most, with water changes every other day, then once the larger tank is set-up and cycled slowly ad them and then maybe add 8-10 new guys and gals (probably leave a pair in the ten if i have one by then). The larger tank is gunna be setup on a drip system almost negating the need for water changes (tho the nitrates will be closely monitored and probably the odd water change every coupe weeks will still be done)

heres another quick question is there any way to properly filter a tank that size without an overflow???? As mentioned before i would like to implement a drip system into this tank and that would be much easier if i use the overflow for that and have a few canisters for filtration (allthough i guess i could build an overflow into my sump for the drip system)
