how many fish for 40 gallon

Yeah...probably in that tank I'd say something like a group of 3 or 4 rusties and 3 or 4 labs is your best bet. If you go with the all males stick to maybe the following :

Labidochromis Caereulus
Labidochromis Hongi
Iodotropheus Sperengae (rusties)
Cynotilapia Afra
Pseudotropheus Socolofi (blue or albino)
Pseudotropheus Acei ('black'/white fin or yellow fin)

1 each is eight fish. If introduced as juveniles there is a higher chance of it working out. You will probably lose fish to aggression as they mature though if you don't have a plan B (return problem fish or have a spare tank to juggle them around). A tanganyikan tank would be really nice, much more stable. Lots of nice options if you went that way.

You also need to bump up your filtration ideally to a good cannister filter plus a good internal or RUGF filter - I would reccomend at least serious cannister and a Fluval Four Plus internal, or even better two high rated cannisters. Your tank will be overstocked (its the done thing with malawis) and you need to massively overfilter accordingly or it won't be pretty.

Avoid like the plague anything that has metriaclimia/melanochromis in the name (too aggressive). Avoid the also large haplochromines and peacocks as your tank is either too small or too small to mix them with mbuna.

edit : should have put this in the rift lake forum for you doing it now :)
