How many fish per gallon?

I know there's a general rule about how many fish, in inches per fish, you should have per gallon in your tank. Generally speaking, what is a safe amount? I want to make sure I'm not over-crowding...

I hope someone knows what I mean...

Totally depends on what fish you have.
Its not only size that matters. Fish have swimming space needs, territorial needs, certain areas they swim in (top/mid/bottom), compatability needs, just to name a few

go to the article section, there is an article discussing this. The problem is, gallons are a 3 dimensional measure and the length of a fish is 2 dimensional. That is, 10 1" fish are not as much mass as 1 10" fish. Finding the mass of a fish is kinda tough. That article will help you further with your question.
