Yeah, that's probably pushing it a bit further than needed. Three big comets would fill the tank up a bit tho...

You'd want to just stick to gf varieties really. There is plenty of variety to give the tank a 'community' look even with just gf...

yeah.... because the goldfish are in a proper tank, i'm sure they could easily hit 12"+.
 
its a shame it would take a while for them to grow to that size.....my LFS sells goldfish that size for $200-350. everything else is the small kind.

any thoughts on how long it would take for them to reach a fairly large size? (like 8")
 
it depends on various environmental factors. If you give them a natural period of rest in the winter like they would in the wild, they will grow faster than if you keep them at a consistent room temp, as in nature this is how they are designed to grow.

It takes a couple of years, although they do grow quick. But you get time to get more tanks and maybe a nice pond :)
 
fishcatch, how would i provide this winter rest?

maybe lowering the amount of food given?
