I got a package of Flourish tabs on clearance at Petsmart for $2.69! Score!! :naughty:

So just a quick question for you planted tank gurus - how many Flourish tabs should I put in a 5 gallon hex? I'm planning on using plain silica sand substrate, and there are 10 tabs to a package.

I think the directions say one every 4-5 inches. I plant mine around 3-4 inches apart in TMS and gravel/sand mixture.

Depending on how many heavy root feeers you got in there, I'd say four or five at most. So enough root tabs for about 4-6 months (3 months per tab, supposedly).

Thanks for that. I was thinking about using half the package now, then using the other half...sometime before Christmas :D I appreciate your input! Not sure yet what plants will go in there, I'm considering moneywort at this time.

I'd probaby jsut put 1 near the heavy root feeders. It doesnt really make sense to spread it around the tank where there aren't plants/stem plants. Stem plants kinda absorb their nutrients from the water column and the rosette plants tend to get it in the substrate.

Moneywort won't utilize the fert tabs... For root feeders, perhaps something like c. spiralis, c. undulatus, or vals - looks nice w/the height of your tank! Dwarf sag could be your foreground/ground cover.

Oh? I didn't realize, I was going by this article:

I figured it was a good choice since it does grow tall. It's readily available at Petsmart (my Petco has nothing fully aquatic except Anubias barteri and Anacharis bunches...pathetic :barf:) And my only independent fish store is saltwater only, so blerg there...

I know there are plenty of great plants being sold and traded around here...and I have taken advantage of those for my larger tanks. But with such a small tank to decorate, I figured I'd try going local this time. With moneywort, I was especially intrigued by the easy propagation everyone describes :) However spiral Vals are also available at Petsmart...maybe I will try those instead. They would love my hard water!

in a 5 gallon hex i'd just spread them around the entire substrate as directed the first and maybe every third feeding. the worst it could do is precipitate and feed your plants when your maintenance lacks. on subsequent feedings you could just put one near each heavy root feeder.
