Those are real close to a 40 long dimensions, so the 35 sounds about right. 40 long I want for my built-in bookshelf tank is 48x12x16.

As everyone else has kind of said, 231 was the magical missing number your dad was telling you to search for.

Nominal tank size has little to do with actual tank capacity. Nominal sizes reflect exterior dimensions, disregarding interior dimensions and substrates, rockwork, etc. They are handy shorthand, but I do hope that everyone on the board does understand that a 10 does not contain 10 gallons, and that a 55 does not have anything like that volume.

LxDXH in inches/231 does give nominal US gallons. The comparable number for Imperial gallons is 277.42.

For quick estimates in my head, I think of a 6" cube as being a gallon. It's pretty close and since many tank side lengths are multiples of 6", easy to use. A 29 is 30x12x18 inches, or 5x2x3 6 inches, so is approximately 5x2x3 = 30 gallons.

Furthermore, if you can find some convenient measurement on your body - like the distance from the tip of your index finger to the tip of your outstretched thumb - that is about this 6", you can quickly estimate the volume of an unmarked aquarium.
