How many gallons is this aquarium????

That would make a great B-day present, and a 35 with that foot print would not make a bad tank at all :D

47" L x 11" W x 16" H.

47 X 11 X 16 = 8272ci

8272 DIVIDED BY 231ci per gallon = 35.809523809523809523809523809524

35.. ERRR.. 36 US gallons.
:)

Nominal tank size has little to do with actual tank capacity. Nominal sizes reflect exterior dimensions, disregarding interior dimensions and substrates, rockwork, etc. They are handy shorthand, but I do hope that everyone on the board does understand that a 10 does not contain 10 gallons, and that a 55 does not have anything like that volume.

LxDXH in inches/231 does give nominal US gallons. The comparable number for Imperial gallons is 277.42.

For quick estimates in my head, I think of a 6" cube as being a gallon. It's pretty close and since many tank side lengths are multiples of 6", easy to use. A 29 is 30x12x18 inches, or 5x2x3 6 inches, so is approximately 5x2x3 = 30 gallons.

Furthermore, if you can find some convenient measurement on your body - like the distance from the tip of your index finger to the tip of your outstretched thumb - that is about this 6", you can quickly estimate the volume of an unmarked aquarium.
