I just took the measurments for this Aquarium I found in my parents garage my parents bought at a garage sale for $5 many years ago.

48" Long
16" Tall (about)
12" wide

A guess would be fine, just so I can guess the size of filter I will need to accomodate for.

thx, perfect for my goldy!

also, how many lbs of gravel would I need for a 40g long tank?

 nice find, that tank is worth a lot more than 5 bucks! I dont' know off the top of my head how much gravel you will need, but you will have one happy gold fish.

That's a sweet deal! I can't really help with the gravel. It really depends on how deep you want it. I try to use as little gravel as possible, to avoid lots of crud building up. I usually end up buying more than I need, even when I think I might not have enough. There's a crapload of gravel in those 5lb bags. Heh.

Oh, and to your sig: I'll take option B ANY day.

a lil rule of thumb

the a lil rule you can follow, but this is not always the case with most cases. i usually go with a pound per gal. i know this may sound like alot, but trust me, it makes your tank look great!

That is about the same measurements as my 55 gallon. I put 2 25lb bags of gravel in mine. It brings the level up to where it can be seen well from across the room. I also have an undergravel filter under there too. Before I had it I had a different type of gravel and always wanted to add another bag. But it looks great now.

Yeah, I found out how much to put in a little while after posting that. I have also found a great deal on gravel, 40lbs of pea stones for under $3. So I think that will be enough. I found good deals on plastic plants, although I would rather have real, it wouldn't be very good for the plants, goldfish are such pigs! So, I guess I will be using those plants in my 10g tropical. I also got lucky because buying a good hood for a 40g long isnt that easy or cheap, but a friend of mine custom made me one. The lighting is going to be rather low, like 1 15w (flouresent) and 2 100w (incandesent) light fixtures. But thats the best I can get. You can't really buy a good used filter and you wouldn't want to anyway, so I'm going all the way with an emperer filter.

You could replace the incandescent bulbs with screw-in fluorescents - they're fairly inexpensive at Home Depot. Per watt, they put out a lot more light, run cooler, and are available in 'daylight' colours which will look much better on the tank (incandescents are very 'red' and will make the tank look pretty orange). Congrats on the bargains! :D
