I currently have 2 otos in one of my 10g. I don't feed them anything, but they seem to be doing pretty well. I'm wonderng if keeping 3 or 4 in a tank this size would limit the food for the otos. Does anybody know? These two otos I have don't really eat blanched veggie I put in. I have never fed them algae wafer, and I probably never will.

Looks like you've got plenty in the tank already if you're referring to the one in your signature.

But...to answer your question...yes...if you add any others, it will limit the food source currently in the tank. You will need to suppliment with veggies. You could look to Kensfish.com for veggie flakes as well.

Whether you have two or four in the 10 gallon, eventually you will need to supplement with additional feedings. What kind of veggies are you feeding them? Mine go gaga googoo over blanched zucchini and cucumber. For something cleaner, some veggie sticks/flakes and algae wafers would be a great supplement as well. :) Good luck.

Hm.. I've had two otos in this is tank for a couple of months already, and they have not had anything other than what's in the tank. I have several zebra and cherry barb fry in my shrimp tank, and they're growing well without me feeding them. I've tried blanched zucchini and cucumber with no luck. It seems that they can't even find it most of the time. If they do find it and attach themselves to it, they stay on it only for a minute maybe. How long do you guys boil the veggie? Perhaps I need to boil it until it's falling apart so it's easy for the fish to eat?

Otocinclus are voracious eaters.

if the tank is new and it has diatoms(brown algae) the oto's will survive on this.
however, the diatoms will run out and unless you have an alternate source of food(algae) they will slowly starve.
some oto's have acclimated and accept algae wafer or blanched zucchini.
others do not.
generally oto's are gregarious and prefer the company of other oto's.

a 10 is too usually considered small given their need for food..and their need for other oto's.

make sure their tummies are nice and round,

I have a 10 gal. shrimp tank, very heavily planted, with 6 ottos in there. Thinking I have 3 males and 3 females, because the girls bellies are so plump and round, and the males, while nice and full looking, are more narrow, and more streamlined. They are eating everything I put in for my shrimp, the piggies, and when an algea wafer floats down, they make a beeline for it, but wait next to it until it softens up a bit. They are doing great in there, no issues at all. I had actually thought they were strict vegitarians, but they nibble on shrimp pellets, and flake food daily.

How long do you leave the veggies in the tank? When I had otos, I usually found that it took about 12 hours before they'd notice the veggies. So I'd leave the food in there for a good 18 to 24 hrs.

Hm, I take it out after about 12 hours. I keep reading posts where people are saying you don't put food in the tank for more than 12 hours. The otos do attach themselves to the blanched zucchini occasionally, but they don't really eat it. If anyone, the cherry barbs tear it up really well. I'll keep this one piece of veggie in the tank for 12 hours.
