Hi all

my first post here, seen some very usefull posts so far

i was wondering how many parrott fish i could keep in a 50 gallon tank, all i have in there at the moment is one plec (4 inches ) and 2 silver sharks ( 2 inches )

thanks

hi
thanks for that, yes that is my silver shark

reading up on them i think my brother in law has his tank overstocked

he has a 190 litre tank

in it he has

1 large plec
3 parrotts (smal)
2 silver shrks
2 bolivian rams
2 pakistani loaches
2 clown loaches
4 zebra danios
8 cardinal tetras
1 diamond shark
4 plattys
1 congo tetra
1 elephant nose
2 golden barbs

mentioned this to him after what i have read here and he says he has had his tank like that for months and had no fish health problems, i was aiming for a tank similair to his but now im wondering how many fish to put in mine.
how many of the above fish would be ok in a 190 litre tank?
i want to get it right as i dont want to make fish suffer
all help appreciated
thanks

Oh my heavens. That tank is beyond overstocked. The clown loaches will get to be a foot or more. The elephant nose also gets pretty big. Any kind of shark is destined to get humongous. And the pleco is probably a common pleco and will get to be 1 to 2 feet long. I'm sure someone else will chime in with more details, but yeah that tank is headed for disaster. Here is a site to look up fish: http://www.aquahobby.com/e_gallery.php

wow where to start... the three parrots alone would fully stock the tank for they will get to around 8-10 inches long.

the pleco is probably a common pleco, whcih can easiloy break the two foot mark, plus they are Extreme Poop Machines (EPM for short)

silver sharks are either columbians or balas, both of which will get over 14 inches long. columbians are also brackish fish.

bolivian rams need excellent water conditons. if they are doing good now, they wont be if this stock keeps up.

loahces like to be in bigger groups than what they are in, and the clowns will get far to alrge for your tank. they will make it past the14 inch mark and like to be in groups of at least 5, which makes the minimum gallonage for them 180, preferably more.

the diamond shark could also be either be a columbian shark or bala shark.

congo tetras, and all tetras in general, like to be in schools of at least 6

elephantnose also need excellent water conditons. in fact, in some places in Germany they use them to monitor the purity of the water. elephantnose have electrical organs, and when the water is not to their liking, the electrical patterns change.

Hi guys

thanks for advice. i iwill send him a link to this and show him, have spoken to him before but he always says he tests his water and it is always spot on, weird thing is he has had this many fish for about 3 months now and says he changes 25% water every 2 weeks and he never has any die.
think i will stick to getting 3 parrots in mine then or maybe even 2 from what ive read above

fish overall are a LOT tougher than we might think & say, but there is a major difference between simply keeping something alive and giving it conditions that are as healthy, stress-free, and clean as possible. fish can survive 9 hours in an overstocked rubbermaid tub with no aeration or filtration or heat but they shouldn't be kept that way. (LOL, ask me about my latest move!)

thanks for all the replies

gonna start off with a few fish and see how i go, will add a few at a time
