So im getting more and more into plants and i think i want to change my substrate. the playsand is cool ans looks good but planting is a PITA. stems keeping popping up and get de-rooted easily if their root system hasnt developed. ive been looking into Turface as a substrate. it looks good and its clay, like most 'plant' substrates. but i was wondering, how many people here actually use it? and if so, how do you like it? what else is nice is that i have a john deer shop local so getting it wouldnt be a problem.

Thanks to anyone who helps :hi:

I don't use Turface but I do use SMS which was replaced by Turface. I believe they are pretty close to the same thing if not mistaken.

As for the SMS....Love it.

i've used it somewhat and i can say it doesn't require much more rinsing than fluorite. i think plants easily root themselves though in it. it's hard sometimes to find the black color though which is why I haven't used it extensively.

Turface and SMS are very light, so if your complaint about play sand is that you have a hard time planting in it, then you won't like Turface. You'll have a hard time getting things to stay put and until a good root system develops, any bottom feeders will uproot your plants.

It's a good substrate, but it won't solve the problem your having with the play sand.

oh... well thats a bummer. what about flora base? a cool shop nearby has it. if not, what else might suit my needs while still being relatively economical?
