How many power-heads should I use?

Ok, from what I've read on these forums, I'm going to a Penguin 660R power-head. It claims it has 170 GPH output.

I want to use it in a reverse flow configuration (RUGF).
I have a 20 gallon tank (24"L x 16H).

Will the one Penguin 660 be enough. or should I put in two?
I put in only 1 riser tube.

I have a single Auquaclear 402 in it now, but it doesn't have the pre-filter capability unless I devise my own.
Under normal flow, the water is really tossed around, and the fish have to fight the current.

The big question in order to answer this well is do you have any other filtration? If you do then I would say the 170 gph is plenty, if you don't I wold aim towards a little more. In reality the 170 should do the job assuming decent maintenance practices (weekly water change and vaccum), but as you know from the other thread, I am a filtration nut (less maintenance happier fish etc. ) If I was only running a RFUg and no other filter I would shoot for about 240 + on a 20 g. If you have the knockouts out, you could put a smaller powerhead on a second riser, and the two would balance out fairly well under the plates. Sorry the 402 didn't work out, I was interested in that because I have never tried the aquaclear powerheads. Penguins reverse flow kit is very nice, and easy though.
 
Reverse Under-gravel Filter

Instead of pulling the water down through the gravel, it is pushed up. Apparently, this is better than the normal flow (down)

I've been reading for about a week about this, and there is great controversy about it, however I think the positives outweigh the negatives.

Do a Google search on RUGF or even on this site, and you'll have a lot to read.

I just got done installing that Penguin 660R on a second riser tube.

HOLY **** !

I know why you like them now. I'm trading my 402 for another Penguin 660R.

I put in 2 Penguin 660R power-heads in the reverse flow configuration. That should be plenty of power.

I'm also running 2 micro-bubble stones, so there is plenty of agitation.

I took the Auquaclear 402 back for a refund. Good thing too, as it killed one of my Tetras by sucking it into the intake! :eek:

With the penguins, that can't happen.
