I am putting together a 29g tank with a few female bettas and some rainbows.

1) How many rainbows can I have?

2) Can I mix and match types (bosemani, praecox, red irian)?

3) Is it ok to have all males?

IMO a 29 gal. is too small for those rainbows, they really need room to travel. I have some praecox in a 29 q-tank at the moment and it's obviously not long enough for them. Look into the smaller species like threadfin, furcata, celebes.

Although the smaller rainbows are very pretty, I am more of a fan of the larger, flat body shape as in the ones in my original post.
Rich, are you the one with the gorgeous rainbow tank? I can't remember the name of the thread that they were posted on.

I would not put the larger rainbows in a 29. they get fairly large and need room to move. The praecox would do well however.

I agree.
The larger bows need 4 feet of swimming space minimum (55g). Even when not full size they love to zoom. In smaller tanks they can go into sulking mode, they just sit above the bottom and do nothing much at all.

You can mix different species, no problem as long as the tank is big enough.

Schools with mostly males can be a little tricky but it can be done. Again the tank needs to be big enough. Getting juveniles all of a similar size and letting them grow together is the good way to do this. Even so if a male gets aggressive and territorial then he can really bother the other fish. Depends on the individuals and tank dynamics. When I had bows I had mostly males and they got along fine.

THANK YOU, Death Pony! What a huge help this is!
By the way, I browsed your artwork and love the wire pieces :)
