How many Rams?

I'm currious how many Rams would be comfortable in a standard 55? Final stocking will be 1 angel, a school of something small that will stick to the top of the tank, and a mix of Gold and Blue Rams to finish it out.

I currently have the Angel, approx. 1.5" at this point, and two male Gold Rams in the tank.

Not sure what I will end up with as far as the school of top dwellers, any advice is welcome.

you may want to add 3-4 females ..make sure you have plenty of cover for the rams.
males will be a bit territorial..and if pairs form you may need to remove extra females.

or provide a ton of cover..lots of driftwood tangles will help as wel as plants that can break line of sight.
 
Thanks, any advice as to a what a suitable schooling fish to add to the tank would be?
 
in a 55, check out congo tetras. They're spectacular; i've yet to see a pic that really does them justice in real life. Beautiful, irridescent, shimmery fish.
 
Jon's recommendation of rummy nose tetras (Hemigrammus bleheri) is a good one, they are a solid favorite of mine to live with just about any SA, particularly Bolivian and Blue Rams....
 
Cardinal tetras in a large school is something to see.

I had two pairs of rams in a 55, they decided it wasn't big enough and beat up on each other until they got sick.

If you want to breed the fish you may want to select carefully from that list - the reason I recommend Rummy-Nose tetras so much is due to their docile nature. I've kept most of that list with my fish and found that in terms of fry predation, the Rummy nose were the least interested, even neons were more predatory than the Hemigrammus (IME)!!

A close second for fry-friendly dithers, are the Penguin Tetra - Thayeria boehlkei.

The worst (or best if you don't want babies) fry predators I've used are either the Black Phantom tetras (or any of the Megalamphodus), or the Red-Eye tetras (Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae).

Of course, if you don't care about breeding and raising fry etc, then any and all of those are ideal tank mates.
