How many SMALL cichlids can you put in a 20g hex

i just bought a 20 gallon hex and i am currently cycling it with gold fish and i was just wondering how many of those small south american cichlids could i put in there i am thinking maybee 3 1 inch fish and yes i know they will grow and yes i will get a bigger tank in the future

I am not usually one to say this but I think you should worry about saving money to get a bigger tank than the one you have for the fish you have in your 55g. and now for the answer to your question, are you talking about apistogramma or rams? If they are apistos dont let their size fool you they can be down right MEAN, my females have killed males and the other way around and they are in their own 20g long. I only have a pair in there. anymore and they would be dead
