i have been told that i only need 1 25% water change a week, but others tell me to do 2 50% changes a week? are either of these accurate?

Water change schedules really depend on a lot of factors. What types of fish are in the tank and how many, is it planted or plain gravel. What you accomplish with a water change is to remove dissolved organics that filtering can't take out, remove substrate debris, reduce nitrate levels that usually climb higher from fish load each day. Removing these 3 things and replacing with clean water = healthy fish. The more fish you have and the more you feed the more often you should do water changes. What are your nitrate readings right before a 25% weekly water change? And what are they immediately following a 25% water change?

I really depends on the water quality to determine what % water change you should do.... I do two 30% water changes a week but I like to keep my nitrates pretty low.

Just test your water after your first water change and see where you are at...if you like the readings you get then test again 3-4 days later and see how much they have changed ...if it deserves a WC then do it... if not see what the tests are after the whole week is up and compare to get a general idea if one WC a week is good enough to keep the water parimeters in check or if you need to do two....you can then pretty much figure out what % WC is best for you and how many you need to do a week to keep your fish healthy and happy.

Depends on quality of the water, and your feeding schedule, and your stocking.

On my 29 I feed once a day, with 1 royal pleco, 1 geophagus red head tapajos and 5 leopard frog plecos.

I do water changes every other day, 30-40%

how long should you wait to test again...45mins?

as everyone else has said it depends on a bunch of things, fish, amount of your feedings, nitrate, etc...

for the most part, i'd suggest doing water changes to keep your nitrate under 20 (for most community fish) or if your nitrates stay low, 30-50% ATLEAST every other week(just making sure to say "at the least" one more time)

As far as im concerned, doing too many water changes is not a concern. There are discus owners that do 50-75% w/c every day! Just make sure the water is conditioned etc. I do 50% w/c weekly, but 25% is the minimm every 1-2 weeks, DEPENDING on your load IMO.

i hav 1 electric blue ahli 1 jd 2 assorted africans 1 common pleco
