CICHlids of what type? Many are diggers, so you may do better with some of the potted plants like anubias.
What types of plants do you want? That, along with whether or not you plan on having CO2 injection and adding fertilizers are determining factors of how many watts you need.

I was thinking along the line of angels so some swords,java fern,money wort,swome kind of ground cover.
ahsupply.com 2x55 kits would be great. at 2wpg gives you the ability to grow many types of plants. adding co2 and ferts would help but wouldnt be a must.
