So guys my tank is 2ftx1ftx1ft,how many fish can i happily keep in this tank without causing any problems and so the kids will still enjoy the fish darting around ? :help:

well you have a 15 g tank i can tell u that. really depends on the fish u want for it, we cant really help till we know that

That is a 15gal fish...you could quite easily put a few different mixes in it. You could go with a planted tank with a Betta, a school of 7 small tetras(embers, neons or such a size)-or white cloud minnows, and maybe 3-5 Otos. I think that would be really awesome!:) Just remember water changes....weekly at about 35-40%. Oh and make sure that you cycle the tank fully-preferably w/o fish-a sample of someones well developed and healthy tank (either from a friend or see if your LFS will give you a squeeze from theirs.)

IME kids like being able to not only watch the movement of little fish but also the size of a Betta type fish.

Good luck......let us know if you have anymore questions and post pictues when you get it set up!:)

Bit stuck as to what i am doing now with the situation in the tank as it is,i would be open to suggestions if anybody has any idea's,something nice and colourful for the kids that i can get in the U.K. Do you think i should just purchase non-aggressive fish,i am open to comments if anybody can help me.My local fish stockist says he will take the fish off me if i decide to get rid.

what is this situation?

there are tons of colorful fish, and tons of combinations they could be grouped in. a large school of tetras, a betta sorority, your typical livebearers (guppys, mollys, swordtails...), or just a single Ctenopoma acutirostre. its all about your personal preferance

Tank was way overstocked when i was given it,12 barbs,6 danio's,2 red tailed sharks 2 platys and 2 mollys.Maybe looking at getting other types of non- aggressive fish for the kids and suggestions.by the way it is a 15 gall tank.

You could keep the danios and the platies if you are so inclined. Maybe add an additional platy and call it good. Or keep the danios and get a few cory catfish for the bottom.
If you want to go with a clean slate there are countless small schooling fish you could try. You may find some at a local fish store that interst you and then get some feedback here.
Harlequin Rasboras are one of my favorites. You could go with 8 or so along with some cories, for example.

The general rule of thumb is 1inch of fish per gallon of tank space

This rule is innacurate and does not take into account territory, aggressiveness, or schooling.

If little kids are going to look at the tank, then guppies are the way to go IMO. :)
