I am getting a 46 gallon bowfront tank in the future but am planning far ahead. I was thinking of Koi Angels, Dwarf Gourami's and Neon Tetras with a crew of cory cats. I will most likely get live plants... java fern, ozelot sword and micro sword. Any problems with this? also, how many of each fish would fit in this tank? Thanks.

I would say a pair of angels, be careful with the gourami's sometimes they do not play well at all with other gourami's. Eventually your neon tetras will become angelfish food. I would choose something else. I LOVE cory's and they do best in schools. I would pick ONE species (whichever ones you like best, albino, swartzi, juli..etc" and put up to 6 of those. They will be happiest with more of their own kind and colors. They are amazingly adept at knowing who is "just" like themselves.

I can't give you a lot of info on your plants. Java Ferns and swords sound good to me because they are great beginner plants.

You are being very wise planning your stock and researching your possibilities now. Just don't cave into an impulse buy at your LFS. Hold off on your purchase until you could get home to research it.

GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN!

I think the Angels and coreys sound great. Angels always make a beautiful centerpiece fish for your tank. I would just get a little bit larger fish for your schooling fish so they won't become snacks. You could try a school of say 4-6 rummy nosed tetra. They are large enough to not really be snacks and I love their colors...plus they school well together. There are also a beautiful "lemon drop tetra" ...can't remember anything but their common name. They are beautiful and have a pretty yellow and black pattern. Though the are "skirted" and it is a similar shape to angels. Take a trip to your LFS...look at what you think you like, write down the names and come home and research. Just remember...if it could fit in an angels mouth (plan for when the angels are large..not babies) the angels will eat them.
Good Luck and good job of researching prior to buying!!!

Cardinals get bigger than neons.

Another possible choice, if you like the coloration of the Neons, is the Cardinal Tetra. You can usually find them larger than what a typical Angel would want to eat but they are very similar in color to a Neon. I've had them together in the past with no problems.

Here's yet another suggestion...

instead of Angels which will likely snack on neons, why not go with Discus?

They're more colorfull and peacefull than angels and as you're planning in advance, why not make it a South America Only tank, getting rid of the Gouramis and perhaps going with some Apistos or Rams?

Also, there's a plethera of South American plants that are available out there so you're not stuck with the java moss/fern and the like.

I think a fleet of congo tetras would be beautiful swimming around, do like 6 of them and some neons or pristellas...the neons might get eaten though...i agree with the gourami vs. angel speculation...my parents have had angels, i've had gouramis, neither play well with any other fancy species....lots of jealousy issues
