How much bio filtration is needed?

Think of the ocean, do you see any mechanical devices keep the water clean for the fish and inverts to live in? Live Rock and Sand is used to simulate the natural filtration methodes that happen in the ocean.

Thanks

I do things different than most. I would (And do) use the 2 Emperor 400s on the 75. I would not use the magnum 350.

I also respectfully disagree with OrionGirl on:
"All filters rely on some sort of media, and solid wastes are easily trapped in this media. Once trapped there, it's out of reach of the normal cleaners in a tank, like snails, shrimp, crabs, worms, and stars. "

Mine are filled with pods and stars, that clean them very well.

Good point--being out of reach of cleaners mostly applies to the wet-dry filters, and those with a prefilter.

Pods is a generic term referring to copopods, and amphipods (as well as a few additioanl kinds). These are small crustaceans that resemble shrimp and some insects. They reproduce in a healthy tank, serve as food for many fish, and help clean up wastes.

Now if I use live sand, live rock and other scavengers to clean with just a power head for circulation and no bio-mechanical filters...How's the smell? Will there be any?

There's no smell from my tanks, unless live rock is exposed. I do have the ability to run chemical filtration, such as carbon, ifneeded, but thus far that hasn't been the needed on the SW setups. Even when the rock is exposed, there's no bad smell, just an earthy odor.

Are you using the cartriges in the 400. Also, what are pods?

Yes I use the cartridges 24/7. When you change them you have to Brush/pick the pods from the cartridge so they get back into the filter and tank. You will also fine the 2 emperors will give you all the flow you need in most cases; unless you are keeping some stonies in a 75. In my opinion you will not need powerheads.
