how much flow recomended for fowlr tank

after getting correct info about algae problems related to flow from him, i think i'm on the right track.over the weekend i started to attack my problem.i checked my ro/di water for phosphate as well as after i mixed with salt and both were zero.i drained off 15 gals and started to clean some rocks in the buckets of drained water. doing so turned the water in the bucket like a mud puddle.a lot of crap was on my rock.

until toejam told me about this process i thought you were suposed to leave the rock alone. again wrong info.
before i tounched anything my phosphate reading was very low but after cleaning rocks tests showed real results at .1

this morning before work i checked phosphate at less than .03. so i think that i may be doing thing right for once. even my fish seem happier.

again all thanks to toejam for giving me correct info to go by.

it's this very problem that kills the aquarium industry.even a lot of fish store owners don't have a clue. if the proper how to info was done like a checklist of exact do's and don'ts then a lot more people may have good first results and therefore return for bigger and better tanks. you gave clear to the point real true info and i think all who read this should know that there are people who know. also thank you very much because 2 weeks ago i was done with my tank. feed up with my money pit.
your easy to follow instruction gave me renewed hope.
when i figure out how to post pics i will .

yah some stores just blah... I deal with strictly saltwater aquarium stores here. So a lot of my learning came from them, books, and screwing up bad.

I think Ace and I talked about this some... agreeing about on the same mistakes we both made.

Well now you have a greater understanding of how "crap" affects your tank, where it settles, and how to remove it.

So many people used to advise me water change water change water change...tunnel visioning on just water. I was reading about sand beds and cyano and it all came together.

I am glad I could share what I learned to help you avoid the massive annoyances I went through. That is my goal in here. To save you all headaches if I can.
 
Since the tank is based on liverock the flow should be the same as in a reef tank. This will allow the rock to better perform its biological function and prevent the fish from becoming obese.
 
I agree with this. I feel almost any marine aquarium should have vigorous water motion, unless something is habitat specific for less water movement.

toejam you are exactly right . your clear advice saved me from forking out $500 for the pumps my local store told me about. needless to say if thats all i changed my problem would still be there.
so in the end the $500 i saved was used to order my first pieces of coral.
for that i thank you!
