How much Gravel ? - Please Help !

Hi Friends !

I'm buying a new 4 Feet Tank whose breadth will be about 1.5 feet and height will be 1.8 feet.

I'm planning to buy good gravel for which I have to travel for about 3 hours and so I dont have much margin for error.

Just wanted to request you to kindly let me know on how much Gravel (In Kilograms) should I buy for this tank. I dont want to install a UG Filter this time, so I'll just keep the plain gravel for about 3 Inches.

Kindly help me and advice urgently as I'm leaving in a few hours.

If you are planning to buy river sand or silt you will need about 23-25 kilos of it for your tank.

While adding the gravel make it slope towards to front, this way all the dirt will collect in the front and will make vacuuming out the dirt easier and faster.

Just as a reference, one 50 lb. bag of pool filter sand went into my 55 gallon tank. It sounds like your tank is the same size.

I used this to calculate my tank 90g - 48x18 @ 2" deep using sand. It called for 100 lbs.. I bought 80 lbs. of Tahitian Sand. I figured after placement of my rocks, then placing the sand around them, 80 lbs. should be enough.

Am I right in my thinking?

most people from what i have seen put the rocks on to of the substrate but it can work.

really? I never heard this. so automatically the dirt goes to the front ?

there still be dirt on the top but must should be bellow. its just simple gravity.

most people from what i have seen put the rocks on to of the substrate but it can work.

I was told when housing Mbunas that rock should be placed on the bottom of the tank first since they tend to dig the substrate out from under rock, possibly causing the rock to collapse maybe killing fish or even messing up the tank.

like i said it can work. prob the bigger rock bases do it that way to.
