:read: How much gravel do I need for a 20 gal aquarium? Is there a formula that you use for so many gallons per so many pounds of gravel. I talk to some place that sells glass gravel they said 1 lb per gallon. This is my first aquarium. It was given to me. Any help I apperciate it!

It really is personal preferance. The 1 lb. per gallon of water is pretty general and is not a bad place to start. So maybe you need around 20 lbs. to start with and see how you like it. You can always add more if you want to later.

I only use as much gravel as I absolutely need. In my hex, it's just enough to cover the bottom and anchor down a couple of plants. In my 50g however, I have a little over an inch because the dojos appreciate burrowing in it.

If you don't have any burrowing fish, and aren't planning on covering the roots of any live plants, I wouldn't go with more than 1/2 an inch. The main thing to remember is that the more gravel you have, the more crap gets buried in it, the dirtier your water is, and the more often you'll have to do water changes.

I usually run 1" in front, sloping to 2-3" in back.
