I have a 90 gal. tank and I was wondering how much weight the tank can handle.
Taking into consideration obviously water, but also sand and live rock?
Just something I was asked by my wife, and I really don't have the answer.

The tank can handle the weight if it is a decent make. Generally you figure 10#s of weight for every gallon but it can handle a little more than that. What is more of a concern for many is if the stand it is on can handle it.

You know, I never really considered this with my 90g tank. I noticed that a lot of tanks on this forum has their live rock in shallow stacks, whereas my rocks go nearly to the surface of the water... So far no disasters though.

I have a 240G w/ 300+ # of LR and another 200# of LSw/ a 55G sump underneath. I live in an apt. put it against a load bearing wall. I think I have about a ton of weight, and am thinking of adding more LR. If the tank falls on my downstairs neighbor Ill let you know roughly how much is too much.

Hehe. That happened to a guy up in Albany here in NY. I guess the FD said it happens often and called aquariums "dangerous." I wouldn't want to be downstairs if something like that happened!

Your poor neighbor. You should pass him in the hall:

Um, so do you guys have renters insurance by chance? How about Life insurance?

LOL and to think im going to be setting up a 110 in another room....lol Ill have roughly.......472G between all my tanks.....

I hope who ever built the apartments did a good job on the floor joist.I like your attitude though.Could you imagine the carnage if the floor fails.Hope it never happens. If only for your neighbors sake, and the stuff in your tanks, and the time and money you will spend to clean it all up,and the time in court for crushing your neighbors cat.Just kidding!!!You are braver soul than I.

acutally I dont have bottom neigh. atm plus im the one with the cat and 2 dogs. But yea a lot of people are suprised at the amount of weight that this apt is supporting, These are NEW apts so its not some rinky dink build since 1846 join. If that where the case I would be wary of my 10G LOL
