is enough to start with.

I am setting up a 110 gallon ..I should have over 100 lbs of live rock and sand..the filtration wil be via a custom refugium/skimmer.
I hope to set this up as a reef tank
Is there a general guideline to use to start with??

It really depends on the type of corals/inverts you want to keep....softies like most mushrooms and polyps will do fine with 2-3 watts per gallon, most hard corals need 5-8 watts per gallon, and some need the intensity that metal halide provides. Here are a few sites to check out as you make your decision - http://www.thereeftank.com/forums/ and http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2002-08/dw/index.php ....here is a site that gives you an idea of lighting needs for specific corals http://www.coralreefecosystems.com/gallery_corals.htm have fun!
