How much rock can this puppy hold

Wow! I guess I'm a weenie with my 30-40 pounds of rock. Maybe I should ask what makes tempered glass so strong? What about the sides, can rocks lay against the sides a little bit? I want to build a lot of caves and hiding spots.

that guy is an idiot though, yes the tank can hold all those rocks, but he should have put the bigger piece on the bottom first, then stack the others on the bigger piece..... whos going to stack there rocks in an aquarium like that.......

anyways, i have about 60 lbs of rocks in my 55 right now, waiting go get another 100 to 200 maybe 240 lbs of rocks, wanting to stack the whole bottom of the tank full of rocks, up to about 8 inches to 10 inches high. so maybe another 300 to 400 lbs of rocks will get me there...

Saltwater live rock also depends on what time period the tank was set up, or is basing it's design off of. The previous rockwall style used more rock then the currently popular island style.

I don't think the point was to show proper stacking procedure. :lol2:
For showing just how much direct weight an aquarium can handle, it worked pretty well. If anything the smaller rock at the bottom made the point even better. Plus it is slate, it doesn't matter what order you stack it in.

Plus, any lbs of rock added must also include the subtracted weight of the water displaced. Really making the rock weigh very little overall.

Tempering is a process of heating and cooling the glass that aligns the structure to be very strong. You're probably more familiar with its use in windshields. Instead of shattering, when broken it turns into cubes that are less likely to cause serious injury. The glass is stronger, but brittle, kind of like cast iron (which is also formed by tempering). This means that you can't cut tempered glass.

The sides of the tank are unlikely to be tempered. They can handle SOME weight against them (afterall, the water is pushing against them all the time), but be cautious and try to minimize contact points.

Thanks a lot! I'm learning to trust my tank more. Maybe I'll come out of my shell. Oniongirl, where in the poconos are you? I live in the poconos too.

Me too, I'm in Stroudsburg. It's already snowing here. Hope we don't lose power, we lost power for 3 days with Sandy and the last I heard is Monroe County can expect 45-60 mph winds later today.

Yep, snowing, but not very big flakes.

We lost power for about half the day with Sandy. Very fortunate--I know a lot of people who were without for more than a week.
