How much sand is needed?

I used 100 lbs for my 150gal. african tank, 5'x2' footprint, gave me about 2"-2 1/2"
add enough to make yourself happy.(I'd keep it 3" or less myself ) Sand rocks, I love it. To prevent rock piles from falling, place the bottom of the piles/stacks ON THE AQUARIUM BOTTOM so the fish don't dig a sinkhole under your rockpile foundation. Have fun!

i have an inch and a half in my 55g with eggcrate underneath but i need to add more cuz they are digging to where you can see the crate. i put 3-4 inches of sand in my 10g with the multies and im haveing to stir the sand and i occationally stir free a small bubble which scares the ever living hell out of me.

Glad that you were happy with the 100lb recommendation. I prefer 3-4" sandbeds. It's just easier to work with, especially with plants. There's really no reason to skimp!

I used 50 lbs on my 60 gal and it turned out great.

Yeah I would want something between 2 and 3 inches generally - those little buggers will soon let you know if they prefer it arranged some other way though
