I bought my 10G All-Glass aquarium today at Petland for 7.99. I am ordering the rest of the supplys on bigals online. I am going to use Onyx sand, for a mix of live plants. How much sand do I need. It 15lbs enough for a 10g planted?

I believe the Onyx sand will change your water chemistry, so be careful with that. Get a good fertilized substrate too, Home depot carries the Shultz aquatic plant soil, that would make a great base for a 10gal, I'd suggest picking up a 5lb bag of that. Put that down first in the tank, and then put your sand over the top, aim to have about a 2.5-3inch base of substrate.

One bag of onyx sand is enough for a 10 gallon tank. In my experience, the onyx sand didn't change my water chemisty enough to even notice. The main reason I chose onyx sand was the color, the second reason was because it is better for plants than plain gravel/sand.

After thinking I think I do not really like the look of sand. Can I use a mixture of that Aquatic Soil they sell at Home Depot w/ some Estes Walnut Gravel> Like maybe 1 inch of that soil and 2 inches of gravel?
