Doesn't make sense to order bulk unless you have multiple large tanks. My local garden center goes by volume anyways...

I didn't say anything about ordering in bulk, like in massive quantity. Bulk simply means it's not pre-packaged. You simply bring your container (box) to the garden center, tell them you want X amount of inches of pea gravel. They fill it up to how much you want and charge you a fraction of the cost of what you would pay by the bag.... and you get exactly how much you need.

I have an idea. Put some substrate in the tank. if it looks too deep, take some out. if it looks too shallow, put more in.

I suggest:
Gravel-all purpose gravel, found next to the concrete(not in the garden section)
Dirty in the bag, but beautiful when cleaned.
or Sand...Pool filter sand...found at any pool supply place.
Both are WAY cheaper than aquarium gravel and 1 40-50 lb bag will do ya.

I used maybe 1/3 of a 20 lb. bag for a 12" x 24" floor, and it still seemed like too much, but that's just a personal preference. A lot depends on your likestock too. Do they like to dig, or are they messy eaters?
Not to hijack, but I'm trying to find a better grade of gravel than most LFS carry, more rounded and smooth. Would that be pea gravel?
