How much weight can a fish tank hold?

The only tank I have ever moved with water in it is my 10gal. and even that I was iffy on. They really should be empty when moved. They are very heavy otherwise.

Water being a live load will shift it's weight when you move carrying it, and if your not carefull your tank would tip over making a big mess if it hasn't hasn't already broken from the stress of moving it full.
Aquariums are designed to hold water not carry it

I agree with all the statements above. Imo it's really not worth the risk. It can crack, leak, drop and shatter...to me that risk isn't really worth the 10-15 min it takes to empty your tank.

I had a 29 g that I was moving from my old studio upstairs to my new studio downstairs.. I drained it down as much as I could (the only water left was in the gravel, which I left) I moved it on the workbench that it had been on, and wheeled it down the hall to the freight elevator.

the problem came when I tried to get off the elevator.. the wheel snagged on the threshold and the whole aquarium toppled over..

the moral of the story is that unless you want to clean up a whole freight elevator (or living room) of water, gravel, flourite, sand and broken glass, empty the whole thing. I thought I was in the clear.. I found out the hard way that wasn't the case.
