How often do you clean your canister filters?

Would you do the maintenance purely based on the water flow rate? i.e. if it splits out decent amount of water, is that a good enough reason to not clean it?

You should also check the nitrate levels. Alot of rotting gunk accumulating in the filter can cause it to rise, I guess.

My eheim I broke down after its first 50 days and then fine filter pad was disgusting. So from now on 50 days lol

Forgot to mention my eheim on my 55 has the help of an ac110 a top fin 60 and an under gravel filter.Somehow still gets dirty ..strange.

I have a Fluval 305 canister and a large Aqua Clear on my 55 gallon. I take care of the canister about once a month - it is biological media only- and the Fluval about once a week or so- I run carbon in it. I feel good knowing that if one goes out the other can handle the tank until I can fix or replace the other.

A related question here for the Fluval canister filter people...

The Fluval manual and website recommend tap water on the mechanical filter (sponge) and tank water for the biological filter. Does anyone actually do this or see a benefit to using tap water on the sponge? I'm breaking mine down today for a cleaning and am planning on using only tank water.

from a technical stand point.. you could do that.(use tap) the material can get pretty mucked up so your rinse water would get dirty fast.

since I use a python to drain I don't have much tank water unless I pull it prior to or during draining.
