I have 1 silver dollar and 2 neon tetras in my 40 gallon so far.. how often should i feed them.. on the species profile page it says for the silver dollar it should be fed multiple times daily... is this true? I don't want my ammonia to get out of control from overfeeding..

Well it's knda hard to starve a healthy fish unless you really get carried away.. So stick with whatever you're comfortable with.

Feeding

I feed twice a day, enough for 5 fish.

Is that too much? Too little? They eat it all up, no waste.

As cgrave said, Feed what you feel is he right amount as often as you feel. Its very hard to kill an ADULT fish by underfeeding but easy by overfeeding.

I have heard.... feed about what the fish(s) can eat in approx 2-4mins.

I generally feed my Parrot fish, twice daily (she gets cichlid pelets in the morning and bloodworm/shrimp or something else live or frozen in the evening) My catfish gets feed about 3times a week on algae wafers and veggies on differing nights but he also clears up the parrots leftovers :). I used to feed my smaller fish (tetras, gouramis, swordtails etc) about once a day on flake

IMO variety is more important than freqeuncy. Fish always like little treats like bloowworm etc

Little tip, if you get a slimey gunge/goo on your gravel then your overfeeding (this is rooting food) but to be honest you will notice your water parameters go thorugh the roof before this.

i have 9 black skirt tetras and 2 gouraamis and a couple of pictus cats and i feed them twice a day. they all seem to be fine and happy. i vary the food too. most times it's flakes with a few pellets for the cats and sometimes i give them tubiflex worms.

i agree with cgrabe

feed it what you think is good enough.just remeber fish are not warmblooded so they dont need to eat all the time.
