Phew! Good to know I wasn't screwing up. I guess the ceramic rings really don't need to be changed out very often. Glad I wasn't doing what the mfg said I needed to do with replacements every three months. Would have been wasting good stuff as well as money!

I had cell pore bio blocks (went out of buissness) in my to AC 500's for 5 years till they broke and half and then started to crumble. So ya I say only when something like this happens. I did read once that it is good to bleach it once a year then declorinate it after to remove all the dead bacteria that builds up but I never found out if this was ture.

I have some cheap cell-pore type blocks I've been using for over 2 years and they are still good. I have a feeling some of the cheap ceramic rings I have will fall to pieces eventually, but I'll worry about it when they do...

Yeah, the only reason i use tank water is because my local water supply does contain chlorine. If it didnt i'd probbly just use tap water too.

I used Eheim Media, the first basket is "EffiMech". Thats what they call there ceramic rings. The second and third basket are both "EffiSubstrat" which is a sintered glass formed into little balls that remind me of the breakfast cereal "Kix". And of course the filter pads between the baskets.

On an unrelated and sad note, i experianced the first fish death in my 125 gallon since setting it up 2 months ago. RIP poor little angel fish.

So sorry for your loss - it's hard when we have to flush our little friends away after they leave us. I just lost two really great siamese algae eaters I really liked.

Does anyone have the best configuration for a Fluval 405 media baskets? Right now I have ceramic rings on the bottom two and a sponge on the top two because the water was cloudy. I know that there are better configs than this. Would "prefilter ceramic" on the bottom, middle two of ceramic rings, then polishing pad on the top be a better way?
