How prone are glass quariums to breaking?

Has anyone here ever lost a typical tank to breakage? Something like the 3footers with 10mm glass.. I must admit that I am a bit nervous as I have a 5yr old that often has other 5yr olds over for sessions of running around the living room going nuts. How much of a smack can these things take? I'm thinking worst case scenario a metal thomas the tank engine train gets chucked at my tank or something like a stick sword whacks into it. I've asked the wife to keep close watch over the tank etc. Hopefully we'll be ok

The stories I've heard of tanks breaking tend to be due to not placing them level, not placing them so all 4 edges are on a solid surface, and some older tanks not having a flush edge on the bottom so that undue stress was put on the joints.

It could get damaged with a well placed smack by a metal toy but I'm not sure it would break. My goldens have learned to not jump on the tank but at first they'd put their front legs up on it to eye down the goby.

I was a told a story of children breaking a 55 gal by rough-housing so apparently it does happen.
I don't really the details. I was told there was broken glass, puppies and fish everywhere. Doesn't sound like it went well.

It depends on how strong your 5 year olds are. From experience a metal toy from my kids being tossed around really doesn't have enough force to break my tank. The glass is pretty thick on my 75g. However on some of the AGA aquariums the glass seems alot thinner and the scenario probably changes. I can see it happening but you are probably ok unless they are intentionally trying. haha...

doesn't take much. keep the kids outta that room and pull them aside and get right in their face and explain it's off limits. kids are better off outside when possible. let them fart themselves out. :)

i have a 200g tank grand kid about all the time 12 mm glass no problem yet haha

I dont feel that is the correct way to explain to the children, by getting in their face..A fish tank should be something that the whole family can admire. Yes, i have a daughter, yes things hit the old reef tank and nothing happened. They are really that delicate, but i suppose thats all down to what hits the tank..

I have had a seal let go on a 20 gallon. As to breaking they do take more than what you would expect. What I would worry about is something hard hitting in the center of the longest pane as that would be the weakest point. With my boys the problemcomes in as to what they add to the tank.

i have only seen a tank break from a few things mostly operator error ie moving rock and letting it strike the side of the tank or those **** mantis shrimp wanting to say hi.
