I cut one cube apart from the pack and it's sitting in a cup of hot water to thaw it. Am I suppose to hold it in my fingers and let them eat at it, or does it sink to the bottom? Help a frozen fish food newbie out. How is it suppose to be done? And do they get the entire cube at once?
Put in a cup of water from your tank and let it thaw. When its completely thawed give it a little stir and dump it into the tank. You might want to dump a little at a time to make sure that what you put in is getting eaten and not just going to the bottom of the tank.
I'm not sure if my technique is any good, but what I do is just stick the food in the tank, and I slowly massage it until it breaks apart into individual pieces for the fish to munch on. Don't seem to have any problems doing it this way, but maybe there are better methods out there.
The one I thawed out was like soup when I opened it. Pretty messy. I put a frozen one in there and they picked away the pieces as they thawed. It still fell apart pretty quick. That's some messy stuff.
Unless your feeding a 55g+ tank I would not feed a whole cube. A half cube is usually enough to feed 3-4 of my 10g tanks. I feed it VERY sparingly and slowly so that all of it gets eaten. I usually swish it around and dump out most of the "soupy" stuff before feeding the more solid shrimp.
Next time you buy, go for MYSIS shrimp as they are much more nutritionally complete
we use bio-pure hikari frozen brine shrimp and we do the exact same thing with the shrimp the mofolepo does (80 gallon bowfront) and the kids will even eats it out of our fingers. the fish seem to get all of the shrimp and they still look for more. we break off pieces in pinch size portions and wiggle it around in the water until it falls apart and then the fish go to town looking for the rest of it. :dance2:
i take a little bit of water out of my tank (doesn't take much) by using a cup. I put in a cube of frozen brine shrimp. I let it sit for 10 minutes or so. I swirl it around to mix it up and feed the fish. I do not dump it all in at once. I try to dump in amounts that able my fish to eat it all. then I wait a few minutes, let the fish search around for leftovers, then I dump a little more in and so on.
works like a charm.
I've used some different brands. some of them def better then others. some just breaks apart and are real messy. other brands are much better. gotta just try a few and find one you like.
I also put a cube in a cup and use tank water to thaw it. Then I use a turkey baster and squirt it to the particular areas where the fish hang out. Some are pigs and swim frantically trying to get every shrimp, others like to hang out in the plants and so i cater to them too. In a way Im like the pizza delivery guy
How I do it
I take a cup ( used only for the fish) and dip it in the tank, I then take the brine shrimp, dump some in the cup and let it unthaw. then when it is all unthawed I go to the sink, and very slowly dump out the water so it is not added to the tank. then I dip the cup into the tank again, and slowly add the water & brine shrimp in . there is no mess, the fish eat it all and I do not have to worry about the mess of uneaten food in the gravel. I do the same with blood worms and krill also.
I just add it slowly so the fish eat it all .
I take a cube and thaw in some water from my tank in a cup. I then use a dropper that I found somewhere, about 1/3 the size of a turkey baster, then add a dropper full to one of my tanks and give fish a chance to clean that up then another dropper full. Just my way of doing it so there is little mess and very little makes it to the bottom of the tank.
