How should I filter a 40gal breeder

Look for a glass hood on DrsFosterSmith.com

I think a 40 Breeder has the same foot print as a 50 & 65 gallon.

says i'll need a center brace.
that's why i was curious what to use for a hood. it's easy on a 55 since it's 2 smaller areas, but the 40 breeder's just wide open top. i also wouldn't trust a piece of glass spanning 3 feet to support a pair of shoplights either.

what should i get for a center brace? just a piece of glass that's a couple inches wide and 18" long to span the middle of the tank shortways? how thick should that piece be?
if i were to use a piece like that, then the glass lid won't have a good seal up front and it will condense a lot easier.

Naaahhhh....don't bother with the center brace. just get the right size top (or make one)

you did such a good job on the stand....how about a nice canopy to match?

neither would I (!!!) you can support your lights off the tank frame or build a top and use 36" lights. Mine were old 36" fixtures that I gutted and replaced with the guts from a HD $8 shop light. 30W bulb with "34W" rated ballast...works great.

ALSO, the bulbs i love, GE fresh & saltwater 9325k's, only come in 24 and 18 inches that i have seen. if they came in 36" then i'd be golden, but i'm keeping in mind that i may have to go with 4 18" bulbs instead of 2 36" ones.

id do a penguin 350 hob with a powerhead. put them on the flanks- use a powerhead with a sponge attachment (aquaclear is best) to flow water to the penguin's intake where it will then be purified and then flow back into the tank on the back wall. the water will then flow into the powerhead. this way, you have circulation and filtration all at once.

i have a 29 setup. due to the tank's weight when 90% full, i had to butt it against the wall, so could not do a hob filter. a canister filter was an option, but too expensive for me. so, i bought a whisper 40i internal filter (20 bucks at petsmart) and put it on one end and then put an aquaclear powerhead with sponge filter attachment on the other end. water is crystal clear and both do a fantastic job. i syphon like zero leftover food from the bottom.

thats my two cents.

in my 40g breeder i have 2 1800l/ph internal power filters with two catridges each. i used to have a cannister on it but i put it on my 110 gallon

id go with a cannister and a hob or i/p/f good luck
