I put a cup in the freezer, like from Mc Donalds, or something filled about 1/2 full of cold water. About an hour later I take it out, it should be starting to ice over on the top.
if needed I break a hole in the ice, then drop the fish in.. usually it dies almost instantly
I have had to do this with a danio. What I did was just scoop them into the cup and place it in the freezer. i thought that maybe it would be a little less painful for the temp to change slowly for the fish instead of the shock all at once.
If you look at the AVMA euthasia guidelines any instantaneous method is okay, freezing is not considered humane unless the fish is already under analgesia. Physically speaking slow freezing causes more suffering than rapid freezing.

The only thing quick and instant if you don't have clove oil available is the garbage disposal. It 'sounds' horrific but in being honest we have to admit it's instantaneous.
