how should i remove fry?-meeki

hi all,i have a 125g w/a pair of firemouth,they currently have about 100 or so fry.the last few times they spawned,they decided to take the kids on a tour of the tank a few times a day and they basically all got picked off.
a friend of mine said he'd take the next batch but they're only about a week old now,is it too early to take them out?if not,do i just syphon them out or...?
and what should we feed week old fry?

I believe that you should be able to use a gravel siphon and a bucket to remove young fry. About what to feed them I have heard (not experienced) that you can try various store bought foods, baby brine shrimp, crushed up flakes, and finely strained egg yolks.
 
I've removed fry from my convicts. I use the hose that is on my gravel vac. with ot the end piece, just the tube. I just suck them up in to a bucket of tank water and trasfer them to another tank. I also feed mine with crushed flake food.
 
I didn't have such luck trying to siphon my jewel cichlids out. I havn't tried any yet but there are several very interesting methods that are listed on thekrib.com so head over there and look over the archives. there's a page set up with past posts on how to catch fry. Kyle
 
Wow, how can you tell the difference between a male and female firemouth. I have been trying for ages, and there is like no info on it. I am talkin about 3-4" firemouths of course, because that is the only size they have at the store. I can tell the males out of the bunch, but the females are so hard to tell. I hate it......I want to breed them so bad. Right now i think i have 2 males in a 29g. which isn't workin so good because one of the males just keeps the other at bay all the time. I thought it was a female at first, but judging from aggression to other male, i guess i was wrong.

Dr_Woo,the males are more colorful also their dorsal and anal fins are more pointed.

lol, i have been trying to tell males and females apart for a while now, and i tell you that **** rule about the color and pointed dorsal and anal fins doesn't really work when they are young. I have two right now in a 29g. and i am guessing they are both male because they cannot live with each other (endless chasing). I tried rearranging the tank to avail. I will have to return one or both, and just get something else, because these are just too aggressive to each other, i could not find a pair, or form a pair if my life depended on it.
 
I have the same problem sexing my fish...all fish(Severums) in my tank have pointy fins to exactly the same length on the body...one is female, two male...coloration is a different story...and in some ways, you can detect a more slight, more rounded body shape...but it is very difficult.
