how small before it's considered "cruel"

Do you folks agree with the italians? I think "classic" bowl style aquariums, with an air bubble or some sort of oxydization and filtering, might be okay for a beta or a couple tetra. Or is that cruel?

Would you like it if I stuck you in a clear, plastic 6x6' box, drilled a few holes on the lid so air could get in and then left you in there, naked, to live out your life?

Heck, air can get in. You can breath, sorta. There's PLENTY of room for exercise. Just run in circles. Oh, you need a certain temperature? Well, sorry, there's no heater you'll just have to take it. I think the room the box is in is fine. Should be okay if it drops down to 62 degrees and back up again. Not like you would notice or anything.

Does that answer your question? Bettas need at LEAST a 3 gallon tank -- with a large surface area for breathing -- with a filter AND a heater.
