I want to make a hood for my 29 gallon tank.

I purchased a 30 inch 55watt florecent light and it is made by all-glass.

When the light is on the tank it rests on the little lips at each end of the tank on the lower part of the trim. Since this is the case the glass i need is to just go between the light and the water. The glass is not holding any weight so i didn't know how thick to make the glass so that it will with stand some heat.

Someone told me to get tempered glass but when i saw te price for the size i needed it was $30 instead of $8-$10 for the regular of the same thickness.

Are the glass hoods in the pet stores tempered glass?

Also the indentation of the trim in the inside is 1 cm if i make the glass this thick would it be ok or does it need to be thicker?

I rather spend more and get something that i think will be thick enough.

Thank you in advance!

Theres no need to spend extra on glass, if its just for a hood. The cheapest stuff will be enough for your purpose.

Tempered glass isn't used too much due to it's ability to fracture/shatter rather than break. When used, it is usually (not always) limited to the bottom.
