How to clean sand substrate?

I have changed from gravel to sand substrate. I have cleaned tank once since changing, I do a water change every Sunday. I know you can't get too close, the python sucks up the sand, but how do you get all of the fishwaste up? It doesn seem to get all of it.

Just use your siphon tube to swirl the water near the substrate.....then suck it up...works wonders
