I just got a great deal on a tank, 150 gallon w/stand, light, gravel, heaters, filters for $150. The previous owner had turtlers in it so it wasn't completely full, and now there is a ring around it from were the dirty water level was.
I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on how to clean scum rings off of tanks. It's a glass tank btw. Thanks.

Get one of your aquarium-only cloths. Wet. Sprinkle a good amount of table salt (fine) and make sure the salt is wet. Not so it scratches but acts as an abrasive. Then lotsa elbow grease. You might even try the wetting with vinegar as opposed to water. Once the salt dissolves, you have to keep sprinkling more on the cloth.

an alga pad might work, or you can use a few drops of bleach. Just remember to rinse the tank out really well and add double the normal declorinant. (and dont add bleach if there's fish in there)

How does everyone feel about aquarium-safe glass cleaner? I saw a bottle of the stuff at the LFS and it said it was aquarium safe and you spray it on and leave it for 5 mins or so and then scrub it off ... I don't have the name unfortunately...

As for the scratches?
I hear that a VERY VERY VERY fine sandpaper can get rid of it but i'd do research on that before you tried it.

glass can be polished with mild abrasives..check with some glass companies or online.

be careul using some cleaners many abrasives are fine grit mixed in a wax..you will need to rinse this clean.

try to see if the ring can be removes with vinegar too..sometimes they are minerl deposits..anfd vinegar can brek down many deposits.
